About our Brigade
Captains Flat Rural Fire Brigade is 44km South East of Queanbeyan and has a dedicated team of local volunteers, proudly serving and protecting Captains Flat and surrounding communities. We are a part of the Lake George RFS District and Queanbeyan Palerang Council.
We respond to bush and grass fires, support the community during emergencies, and work year-round on preventing and responding to fire and other emergencies.
We are always eager for new members to fulfil roles in training, administration, logistics, operations, support and equipment maintenance.

Understanding these alerts helps you act early and stay safe during a bushfire.
🟡 ADVICE – A fire is burning but there is no immediate danger. Stay informed and monitor conditions.
🟠 WATCH AND ACT – Conditions are changing. There is a heightened level of threat. Take action now to protect yourself and your property.
🔴 EMERGENCY WARNING – You are in danger. Act immediately. Fires may threaten suddenly and without warning.
Alerts can change quickly, so always stay up to date via Hazards Near Me NSW, local radio, and official NSW RFS channels.

Now is the time to review your bushfire survival plan as we head into the 2026-27 bushfire season. Further north of us are experiencing fires that have gone to emmergency and watch and act warning levels already.
If you have questions or would like to discuss your plan and key triggers for you and your family please come along to our brigade Get Ready event on Saturday 3 October 10am-2pm at Winchester Oval, Foxlow Street, Captains Flat.As of 6pm, Monday 21 September, there are 71 fires burning across the state, with 32 not yet contained. There are currently over 700 firefighters and incident management specialists working to contain these fires.
With mostly moderate fire danger forecast across NSW over coming days, these easing conditions will provide an opportunity for firefighters to bring a number of these fires under control.
We ask those in the vicinity of the fires to continue monitoring the conditions and to stay up-to-date with the latest information through the Hazards Near Me app and the #RFS website: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fnm
Some great live fire MVA training in the Flat today, wind, temperature and fire behaviour (even under controlled conditions) make our skills sharper and always good to practice our core skills too.
Our thanks to everyone who made this happen, alot of work and time goes into a training session like this. Our thanks also to the Mens Shed who supplied us milk during morning tea and the phenomenal Jo who made a gluten free coconut syrup cake!!! Makes training enjoyable and kept us going through the scenarios. Thanks finally to our brigade members who attended today and those who worked in the background to make this happen, nothing happens without your commitment and enthusiasm.

Tomorrow, Sunday 20 September we will be holding a controlled "live fire" training in the carpark at the Captains Flat fire shed on Foxlow Street.
Please do not be concerned if you see live fire as you pass our shed, we will all be there!!! And please if you are in the area, maintain a safe distance from our training. This training is a great opportunity to practice our core skills and for some of our newer members to work with live fire. Pic of the type of gas prop we will be using.
As always you are welcome to have a yarn with any members outside of the training area. Now is a great time to start preparing your family, hime and property for the upcoming bushfire season.
Update: 8.33am. The school is now operational.
NSW Fire and Rescue have finalised their investigation and have just departed Captains Flat and our briade will be returning to station. For families who have students at the school tge school has advised it is now operational.
Morning Captains Flatters. Captains Flat Brigade responded to a gas incident at Captains Flat School (Thursday 10 Setember 7.30am) and are on scene. NSW Fire and Rescue will be in attendance and the school has commemenced the appropriate response and coordination.
Please note the school is CLOSED until further investigation is undertaken. If you have kids attending the school you will receive information from the school. To our community please avoid the area, there is no immediate threat but we need space for emmergency crews to do their work.

Bushfire Danger Period for NSW Rural Fire Service - Lake George Commences 1 October 2026 🔥🚒
The Bushfire Danger Period (BFDP) will commence in the Lake George area on Thursday, 1 October 2026.
From this date, anyone planning to conduct a pile burn or other permitted burn must obtain a Fire Permit before lighting.
During the Bushfire Danger Period, you must obtain a Fire Permit before lighting your burn.

Before lighting your burn, you must provide at least 24 hours notice:
- Notify NSW RFS online
- Notify all adjoining neighbours of your intention to burn
BURN SAFELY
Continue monitoring weather and fire conditions right up until you light.
Having a permit does not automatically mean conditions are safe to proceed. If conditions change, postpone your burn.

As we enjoy the cooler months now is a good time to think about your preparation, whether you live in the Captains Flat villiage, or on a surrounding property. How are your gutters looking? Do you have a wood pile near your house? Will you move it (if not used) before the bushfire season? Are there cleared areas around your property? Does your bushfire plan need updating? Do you have a plan for your animals (domestic and livestock)?
As we all start thinking about our preparation our Brigade would like to share a video of some of our activities across our district, across NSW and on interstate deployments during the last bushfire season. We are small but as a community we come together as a collective. Always Captains Flat proud!!

Captains Flat is a bushfire-prone community, and emergency assistance may take longer to reach us because of our remote location. Preparing your property early can help reduce the impact of fire and make it safer for you and firefighters.

- Clearing leaves and debris from around the home
- Cleaning gutters
- Trimming branches away from buildings
- Maintaining lawns and removing long grass
- Keeping access paths clear for emergency services
- Storing firewood, fuel and other combustible materials safely
Need assistance? Try AIDER
The NSW RFS offers the AIDER program — Assist Infirm, Disabled and Elderly Residents.
AIDER is a free, one-off service supporting eligible residents who may have limited help available from family, friends, relatives or other services. The property must also be located on bushfire-prone land.
AIDER may assist with:
- Clearing gutters
- Thinning vegetation around the home
- Removing leaves and tree debris
- Trimming branches close to the home
- Mowing or slashing long grass
