About our Brigade
Captains Flat Rural Fire Brigade is 44km South East of Queanbeyan and has a dedicated team of local volunteers, proudly serving and protecting Captains Flat and surrounding communities. We are a part of the Lake George RFS District and Queanbeyan Palerang Council.
We respond to bush and grass fires, support the community during emergencies, and work year-round on preventing and responding to fire and other emergencies.
We are always eager for new members to fulfil roles in training, administration, logistics, operations, support and equipment maintenance.

Afternoon Captains Flatters, even though it is wet today 🌨☂️🌨 and over the weekend the official bushfire danger period has begun. How have you prepared or are preparing for the upcoming season?🔥 Bush Fire Danger Period Commences Today 🔥
Today marks the commencement of the Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) for the Lake George District and surrounding areas. During this period, a fire permit is required before lighting any fire in the open.
Residents and landholders should ensure they understand the regulations relating to the use of fire. In addition to obtaining a fire permit, you must notify your local fire authority and neighbouring properties of your intention to burn at least 24 hours before lighting the fire.
Please note that properties require inspection before a permit can be issued, so allow sufficient time for processing and inspection.
Now is also a good time to discuss bush fire preparedness with your household. Create or review your Bush Fire Survival Plan and ensure everyone knows what to do if threatened by fire.

Morning Captains Flatters, a reminder that today is the formal commencement of the 🔥2026-27 bushfire danger period 🔥for our district.
You will start seeing our bushfire danger rating signs in use again. Take time to understand what the ratings and associated messaging mean for you, your family and your bushfire survival plan.Today marks the official start of the bush fire season, with the Bush Fire Danger Period beginning in most NSW Local Government Areas.
If you’re planning on conducting a burn, you’ll require a fire permit from your local Fire Control Centre or #RFS brigade. Fire permits help ensure fire is used safely and reduces the danger to you, your property and the community.
Residents and land holders must know the rules when it comes to the use of fire. Along with having the required fire permits, you need to notify your local fire authority and neighbours of your intent to burn at least 24 hours in advance.

Morning Flatters, just a reminder that tomorrow, Thursday 1 October is the start of the 🔥Bush Fire Danger Period🔥 in our district. The Bush Fire Danger Period will continue until 31 March 2027.
This means you will now require a FIRE PERMIT if you are planning to burn.

Once your permit has been approved by a NSW RFS Permit Issuing Officer, who will need to come out to your property to assess the burn area, containment and water availability, you will need to notify your local fire authority and your neighbours at least 24 hours in advance before any approved permit burn. Please note that permits can be suspended, due to weather conditions and you will be notified of this by the RFS.
NSW RFS volunteer permit issuing officers will need enough notice to allow them to allocate their time to do an assessment on your proposed burn and approve the permit or not.

Now is the time to review your bushfire survival plan as we head into the 2026-27 bushfire season. Further north of us are experiencing fires that have gone to emmergency and watch and act warning levels already.
If you have questions or would like to discuss your plan and key triggers for you and your family please come along to our brigade Get Ready event on Saturday 3 October 10am-2pm at Winchester Oval, Foxlow Street, Captains Flat.As of 6pm, Monday 21 September, there are 71 fires burning across the state, with 32 not yet contained. There are currently over 700 firefighters and incident management specialists working to contain these fires.
With mostly moderate fire danger forecast across NSW over coming days, these easing conditions will provide an opportunity for firefighters to bring a number of these fires under control.
We ask those in the vicinity of the fires to continue monitoring the conditions and to stay up-to-date with the latest information through the Hazards Near Me app and the #RFS website: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fnm
Some great live fire MVA training in the Flat today, wind, temperature and fire behaviour (even under controlled conditions) make our skills sharper and always good to practice our core skills too.
Our thanks to everyone who made this happen, alot of work and time goes into a training session like this. Our thanks also to the Mens Shed who supplied us milk during morning tea and the phenomenal Jo who made a gluten free coconut syrup cake!!! Makes training enjoyable and kept us going through the scenarios. Thanks finally to our brigade members who attended today and those who worked in the background to make this happen, nothing happens without your commitment and enthusiasm.

Tomorrow, Sunday 20 September we will be holding a controlled "live fire" training in the carpark at the Captains Flat fire shed on Foxlow Street.
Please do not be concerned if you see live fire as you pass our shed, we will all be there!!! And please if you are in the area, maintain a safe distance from our training. This training is a great opportunity to practice our core skills and for some of our newer members to work with live fire. Pic of the type of gas prop we will be using.
As always you are welcome to have a yarn with any members outside of the training area. Now is a great time to start preparing your family, hime and property for the upcoming bushfire season.

Need assistance? Try AIDER
The NSW RFS offers the AIDER program — Assist Infirm, Disabled and Elderly Residents.
AIDER is a free, one-off service supporting eligible residents who may have limited help available from family, friends, relatives or other services. The property must also be located on bushfire-prone land.
AIDER may assist with:
- Clearing gutters
- Thinning vegetation around the home
- Removing leaves and tree debris
- Trimming branches close to the home
- Mowing or slashing long grass
